Kamala Harris

Well, that’s that. I don’t have to hear people grumble and gripe about how old Biden is anymore. If Americans voted their interests, Elizabeth Warren would be the incumbent and age would never have been an issue. The electorate in this country is a lot like the hound dog lying on the nail, howling in pain.

Biden’s decision to drop out of the race showed integrity. He’s been a decent president on the domestic front; as for foreign policy, he belongs in front of a tribunal.

Harris will likely do well as president. Her positions on some of the major issues are reasonable. She is a defender of women’s rights. She supports sensible increases in gun control; anyone who gets an “F” from the NRA must be doing something right. On the economy, she seems in lock-step with Biden, whose administration was successful on that front. With respect to climate issues, she has shown rational concern. Regarding Israel and Gaza, for a Washington insider, she seems to reside at the critical end of the spectrum; devotion to Israel in Washington is practically a catechism, and Harris has talked about a ceasefire and opposed the invasion of Rafah. On immigration, she tends to blend in, at times using muscular language, but has also sounded numerous humane notes on the subject. Though she has waffled on Medicare for all, her positions on healthcare have on balance been progressive-ish—which is a lot more than I can say for her presumed opponent. And she’s LGBTQ friendly.

Is Harris gaffe prone? Yes. There is the word-salad factor. Is she an intellectual powerhouse? Probably not. But, really, running the country is not that hard, and her general orientation is encouraging. So she’s not Clinton or Obama, but she’s not Reagan either. I’m not concerned. (Are you familiar with her presumed opponent? If anyone has made it abundantly clear that ANYONE can be president, it’s him.)

I live in Illinois, so I will be voting third (Green) party. However, if I lived in a swing state, I would be voting against the felon who ridicules people with disabilities, and cast my vote for Kamala Devi.
