"Why are we in the Middle East?"

Rationally argued piece on the stated reasons why the United States is involved in the Middle East, and why those reasons fail under the slightest scrutiny.

I'm not familiar with Faux's economic writing, but the article's title got my attention. He correctly plays down the oil factor, emphasizes the defense industry's role, and reminds the reader of the fact that phenomena like ISIS are symptomatic of the region's problems (for which Washington bears much responsibility). Faux also points out, again correctly, that while Democrats and Republicans might disagree on tactics, the core doctrine goes unquestioned: that the United States must bear the burden of tending to national security, fighting terrorism, protecting Israel, securing the flow of oil, and other fictions.
