Informative piece in the Guardian on the current situation in Gaza.
Between the military-sponsored government in Egypt and the continued policies of Israel, the Gaza Strip is now caught in a vise. This is not to suggest that Egypt wasn't complicit in Israel's blockade of Gaza (2007-present) during Mubarak's regime; but things were at least slightly easier for Gazans in those years (and for many Egyptians, it turns out).
Though under occupation since 1967, life for Gaza has only worsened, especially after Israel's "disengagement" (2005) from the territory, when Israel withdrew its presence from the coastal strip's interior. However, it must be kept in mind that Gaza still remains illegally under occupation, due to Israel's continued control of the Strip's coastline, airspace, and land border.
