Drones

What makes the substance of this article even more tragic is that the US "war on terror" is essentially the management of a symptom Washington helped create. US force projection in Southwest Asia and the Middle East has fostered violent resistance. This includes US involvement during the Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan (1979-89), which in turn helped create present security concerns in Pakistan.

As Osama bin Laden announced to the American people just prior to the 2004 election: "let [President Bush] tell us why we did not attack Sweden [on 9/11], for example.... Just as you waste our security, we will waste your security."

This drone symptom management only stands to self-propagate and worsen the situation.

Hearing stories like those of Rafiq ur Rehman - from him and his children - helps humanize this issue, which it desperately needs.
