It turns out the threat extends a bit farther than Israel. Top American intelligence officials warn that the United States is at risk of terrorist reprisal. The Annual Threat Assessment report issued by the director of national intelligence had this to say:
The Gaza conflict is posing a challenge to many key Arab partners, who face public sentiment against Israel and the United States for the death and destruction in Gaza….
This calls to mind similar thinking on the part of the Eisenhower administration. They concluded that the United States has an agenda in the Middle East, the people there are not going to like it—“public sentiment”—so we need to ensure draconian security measures in those countries, because we’re not going to alter course.
So, in a sense, history is repeating itself. We’ve been warned.
