We as a culture watch many films and television series and are presented with lessons and warnings. And we are quick to judge the imbecilic. But we tend to not heed these lessons and warnings. There is a tragic disconnect. Us sitting there, pointing, and calling characters idiots. It paints an embarrassing picture. Adam Smith said “If we saw ourselves in the light in which others see us, or in which they would see us if they knew all, a reformation would generally be unavoidable.” Now there’s something else we do not do: heed the wisdom of centuries past. We would do well to attend to both sets of lessons, lest we end up becoming the people we are quick to criticize in films and series.
Jean-Paul Sartre said, over the course of our lives, we draw our own self-portraits. We should take what he said very seriously.
I started the series Severance tonight and my gears are turning.
