Romney's 47 percent

Recent piece on CNN's site addressing Mitt Romney's videoed comments in Boca Raton, containing embedded links also worth looking at.

The ongoing phenomenon of Romney's remarks is interesting from the standpoint that th
e critical commentary is issuing from points fairly wide on the political spectrum. In turn, many good articles are being written correcting the outright mythology that has become the GOP's party line. In a way, the governor did the country a favor by inadvertently moving the discussion toward the rational center.

In effect, these kinds of utterances that expose the Republican party's rightward drift (e.g., "legitimate rape") are functioning in a capacity similar to the satirical newspaper the Onion. Just like in parody, the instinct is to distance one's self from the subject of ridicule. In the case of the GOP, it's encouraging that distance all on its own.
