The CIA and Syria (note to Romney essay)

A follow-up note to my essay on Mitt Romney posted yesterday: In it I mentioned the indirect nature of US involvement in connection with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar funding and arming the Syrian opposition. The New York Times yesterday reported on the CIA's activity in southern Turkey monitoring arms movements. The piece offers greater depth to the story (see also Wall Street Journal, June 13), and thought I would mention it here.

While still indirect, it is to the least degree. That Syria is being treated as a proxy war can only spell further and worse suffering. As I mentioned, Obama's handling of this situation is harmful as it is; that Mitt Romney would intensify this approach is unconscionable.
